For more than 22 years, the Helen Mason Scholarship Fund, named in memory of
Artistic/Executive Director Lynette Mason Gregg's mother, has assisted
dancers by expanding their dance training beyond the studios in Houston.
The current program is four weeks in New York City, where the 8 dancers
selected by an outside panel are chosen to participate in programs at
Joffrey Ballet, Broadway Dance Center, STEPS, Alvin Ailey, American Ballet
Theatre, and School of American Ballet. One dancer is given a full
scholarship for the four week program.
In addition to the intense training that the students receive - the dancers
are immersed in the culture and education that New York City has to offer,
visiting such sites as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of
Liberty, the Empire State Building, Chinatown, Radio City Music Hall and
Fifth Avenue. They attend a variety of Broadway shows and professional
dance and music performances at famed theatres such as Lincoln Center and
Carnegie Hall.
The scholarship group will be staying again this year at Fordham University
located near Lincoln Center. Housed in each apartment, there will be four
students, one chaperone, and one chaperone guest.
